Dancing in the City: Women’s Performances on Chinese TikTok as an Urban Stage for
Feminist Agency and Gendered Oppression
Watching young Chinese women dance online reshaped how I understood dance. Visibility gave some dancers confidence and agency, while exposing others to harassment. That tension stayed with me and pulled me into research. I looked at as many dance videos as I could and analyzed them, examining how public space, social norms, and mediated visibility shape how women move, appear, and claim space.
